Imagine floating in 1000 pounds of salt water in a specially designed tank. You can choose full sensory deprivation in quiet darkness or select relaxing sounds. I find it really does give me “true rest” and a lovely way to let go, meditate, or use my imagination. Join us for a 90-minute "tour" which will include a classroom presentation in SWACO’s Resource Center and a bus tour inside the operations of the landfill. SWACO (4239 London Groveport Rd., Grove City 43123) is a public agency focused on promoting awareness about the importance of waste reduction, recycling and safe disposal at the landfill. You see a few fireflies here and there on any summer night but the vast majority of firefly flashes are concentrated for about a week's time in mid-June. It's firefly mating season and there is an EXPLOSION of firefly light. The musical accompaniment is provided by hundreds of male Gray Tree Frogs on the make. The firefly talk starts at around 9:30 pm and we walk between 10 and 10:30 pm. Location: TO BE DETERMINED (depending on conditions). Last year we walked in the Tallgrass Prairie at Whetstone Park of Roses but traditionally, we meet in the parking lot at the Wilma Schiermeier, Olentangy River Wetland Research Park. On Saturday, September 24, at 9:30 am, we will meet at the Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park at the Cedar Ridge Area, 1775 Darby Creek Dr., Galloway 43119. The entrance is between Broad St. (Rte 40) and Alkire Rd. It is south of the Nature Center entrance. A map and some info is here: https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/battelle-darby-creek/ For those who want a level, 2-mile round trip, we will walk on the Darby Creek Greenway Trail from Cedar Ridge, past the summer bison pasture to the Nature Center (about 1 mile). This is one of the best nature centers in the park system. We can spend some time at the nature center and then return to the Cedar Ridge Area for a round trip of about 2 miles. For those who want a more challenging hike, we will take a group on the Cobshell Trail down the hill to Big Darby Creek, and along the Big Darby on the Indian Ridge Trail (up and down some hills) returning to Cedar Ridge Area for a round trip of about 3 miles. We will try to all get back to Cedar Ridge by about 11:30 am. If you would like to bring a picnic lunch, we can find a picnic table in the Cedar Ridge area and have lunch when folks have finished their respective hikes. There is a full moon on September 10, which also happens to be our 45th wedding anniversary. Help us celebrate by watching the movie "Moonstruck." This 1987 romantic comedy, starring Cher and Nicholas Cage, tells the tale of three generations of an Italian-American family and their adventures and misadventures in love.
